Axis Mundi

Lexington Art League

209 Castlewood Drive, Lexington, Kentucky 40505

Friday, April 4th
5:00pm - 8:00pm EDT

This is a three person exhibition of Georgia Henkel, Liz Swanson, and Lina Tharsing opening April 4th from 5 - 8pm at the Lexington Art League and running until May 16th.

The axis mundi is broadly defined as a line of connection between heavenly and earthly realms. Stretching from the hidden depths of the earth's interior, across the horizon and into the sky above, the axis mundi encompasses a triad of distinct strata that share a common thread: their existence as cosmic realities manifesting spiritual wonder.

Together, we three share this diverse collection of paintings and sculpture to explore the ancient themes embodied in the axis mundi, with the intention of instigating deep conversation about the contemporary world we inhabit:

Earth: rich layers of carbon and bone; animal, burial, root.

Horizon: a threshold of change and shift; a portal; an orienting force.

Sky: infinite space, unknown; clouds, color, lightness, air.

While each of us cannot help but freely roam the full breadth of this cosmic territory, we each stake our respective claims to this triad of strata in diverse and unique ways. It is this difference we seek to celebrate through our exhibition as way of expressing our shared belief in the endless vantage points for seeing and being in the world. As in life, our work reveals our individual tendencies for placing ourselves.
