The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center proudly presents IMAGES OF DIGNITY: WHO WE ARE AS A PEOPLE, an exhibit by artist Joseph Pearson. Offering a counter-argument to the seemingly negative perceptions of Black men in the United States, this exhibit will be displayed from June 1 - July 28, 2022, with an opening reception on Saturday June 4th at 5:00 PM.
Featuring portraits of famous figures alongside snapshots of everyday life, this body of work places emphasis on positive representations that address the various perceptions of Black men. The subjects capture only a small portion of the contributions Black men have made to America and beyond, from scientists and inventors to politicians and military heroes.
Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Joseph Pearson is an artist, muralist, and curator with 50 years of experience. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Jackson State University before training professionally for five years at the Art Students League of New York. Pearson later earned his Master of Education from William Carey College, and is currently a member of the Asheville Area Arts Council and Allied Artists of America. He is also a member of the NAHBCU (National Alliance of Artists from Historical Black Colleges and Universities).
IMAGES OF DIGNITY: WHO WE ARE AS A PEOPLE is open to the public June 1st through July 28, 2022, with an informal opening reception and artist meet and greet with Joseph Pearson on June 4, 2022. Gallery hours are weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The exhibit will not be open during the July 15 LexArts HOP night due to a facility rental.
