Outside the Spotlight Jazz & Improvised Music Series presents a double-header event, another evening of music for mind and body, set in the historic Loudoun House.

Chicago-based group JAKAL brings long-time OTS reed player Keefe Jackson and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm back to Lexington. Joined by percussionist Julian Kirshner, JAKAL is an ongoing conversation between lifer improvisors, reacting and interacting together in a joyful celebration of the musical moment. On their latest release Peroration, loose rhythms meet with electronic-treated strings and saxophone punctuations as these compositions are shaped in real time.

Basher is the project of New Orleans saxophonist Byron Asher. Blurring the lines between jazz and free improvisation, their music draws on the celebratory and spiritual roots of the Crescent City. Released this year, their new album May Day reunites Asher with fellow saxophonist Aurora Nealand, synth player Daniel Meinecke, and drummers Zach Rhea and Brad Webb, in a rousing collection of pieces drawing on the sounds of summer and International Workers' Day

This event is free and all ages. Donations accepted at the door support the ongoing work of the OTS series and are greatly appreciated. This performance is sponsored by WRFL 88.1fm, the student-run radio station for the University of Kentucky. WRFL offers its listeners a source of music, news, and other programming not regularly found through other media outlets in central Kentucky and is a longstanding supporter of the OTS Series.
