Cancer in Appalachia

September 10 - October 29

Gallery HOP - September 17, 2021

The Appalachian Career Training Oncology (ACTION) Program at the University of Kentucky Markey Career Center prepares high school and undergraduate students from Appalachian Kentucky to address the cancer problems in their communities now and in the future. By sharing cancer education information, ACTION students can increase community members' cancer knowledge which can aide in reducing cancer rates in the area.

Challenging students to photograph their communities with an eye towards the causes and consequences of cancer deepens their understanding of place. It heightens their own awareness of the issues facing their communities and serves as a bridge. Through the images, ACTION students are sharing cancer education, raising awareness, and building community that stretches far beyond the Appalachian region of Kentucky.
